THE ASTON MARTIN GEARBOX

Aston Martins, as with any luxury and exclusive car, require first class maintenance. Although Aston Martins are synonymous with excellence, elements such as gearboxes need attention once in a while. The gearbox is an integral part of the running of the Aston’s engine, and finding a quality replacement or conditioned gearbox is not the easiest of tasks.

ASTON MARTIN DB9 VOLANTE GEARBOX

Options are the Graziano-sourced six speed manual gearbox with twin plate clutch or the ZF sourced six speed automatic gearbox has seen improvements by utilising a new hydraulic control box. It comes with buttons to select the different models and an optional steering wheel mounted paddle shift.

Graziano are a gear and transmission manufacturer who supply Aston Martin, whilst ZF are one of the leading automotive suppliers, and whose gearboxes are used extensively.

ASTON MARTIN DB7 GEARBOX

The automatic gearbox is a fully automated ZF version with gear changes on the steering wheel.

ASTON MARTIN DB7 VANTAGE GEARBOX (1990-2003)

Borg Warner T-56 transmission – made of aluminium and brass synchros making up the synchromesh. P&W Engineering can supply reconditioned T-56 gearboxes. Originally made by Borg Warner, the T-56 is now made by Tremec.

ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE GEARBOX

A Graziano transaxle which is used for both automatic and manual gearboxes.

ASTON MARTIN DBS V8 GEARBOX

The gearbox was the Chrysler ‘Torqueflite’ 3-speed automati, Chrysler Corporations three speed automatic gearbox which was released in 1956.

ASTON MARTIN DB9 GEARBOX

A ZF six speed automatic gearbox which has a unique mechatronic unit for the Aston Martin.

ASTON MARTIN DB4 GEARBOX

A four speed all-synchromesh four speed unit, designed by David Brown.

AM V8 VANTAGE SPORTSHIFT

A fully automatic manual gearbox

WHY GEARBOXES?

Effectively a gearbox (or transmission) regulates the torque and ensures that the power of the engine is transferred effectively to the wheels. In layman’s terms, an engine generates a lot of powers, but all at one rate. A car needs different levels of power depending what speed it is going at. There is an inverse relationship.

Low Gear: Low speed and high power
High Gear: High speed and low power

The gears within the gearbox (or transmission) have a computer which controls the changing of the gears, whilst very simply, with a manual gearbox, the driver controls when the gears are changed.

Gearbox Parts

Aston Martin gearboxes have a number of parts which makes reconditioning rather than replacing with a new gearbox a viable option in certain situations.

Steel parts to the gearbox: eg shafts, planetary gear carriers
Gearbox cast parts: eg housings, hydraulic valve plates, small cast components
Geared components: Spur gears, geared shafts, bevel gears, sun gears, planetary gears, ring gears
Sheet metal parts: Fine-blanketed parts, formed parts
Other parts: Sealing elements, filters, standardised parts, add-on parts

Gearbox Problems & Failings

Buying a new gearbox for your Aston Martin can be both expensive, and unnecessary. Reconditioning your gearbox may be just as effective as replacing it and can deal with the following gearbox problems:

Wearing of Seals

This will occur naturally over time with gearbox usage and can result in the seal wearing the shaft counterface. Replacing the seal might not be sufficient as the shaft may need replacing by a new or reconditioned one.

Bearings

Problems with the bearings can be due to the high loads that the gearbox is subjected to, along with other causes such as unclean oil. Ultimately if the bearings are damaged this may lead to further problems in the gearbox, such as the shaft or the housing bearings seats.

Gears

Generally problems with gears are caused by wear and tear and intensive gearbox activity. Similarly, if the gearbox already has problems with bearings, or other components, then the gears may also become damaged.

To stop an Aston Martin gearbox wearing and requiring reconditioning, transmissions use gear oil.
This lubricates and deals and reduces the negative impact of the sliding friction that constantly occurs when the gears make that contact. Some gearboxes require their oil changed more than others, with specific reference to the Aston Martin’s with automatic gearboxes.

There are lots of components, with many of them classified as ‘gearbox parts’ which wear. They have been built for their inter-changeability of these parts, which allow both replacement and re-conditioning.
